Goof Troops lead early, hold off fading Bow-Dazzlers
Arizona Goof ran for 216 yards and Goof Troops clinched the number two seed for the playoffs with a 24-21 victory over Minnie’s Bow-Dazzlers.
Goof Troops win third straight as Arizona Goof breaks single season rushing record
Arizona Goof barely practiced last week because of an injured shoulder that he got after slipping off a rope while entering a window at the Goof Troops practice facility. But when game day came, the only thing that could stop him was not being able to find any licorice.
Also known to his Italian fan base as Indiana Pipps, Arizona Goof said his workouts last week were limited to improving a few mental tricks that he can use on his next adventure around the world. Whether it was the down time or the new tricks, Arizona Goof led the Goof Troops to a 24-21 victory over the Bow-Tique Bow-Dazzlers.
With 856 rushing yards and 9 TDs in his past 5 games, Arizona shattered the single season rushing record ending the 2016 regular season with 1,914 yards and 20 TDs.
The Bow-Dazzlers Minnie Mouse threw for 372 yards and three touchdowns, the last an 11-yarder to her niece, Millie Mouse, with 1:01 to play. But the Troops recovered the subsequent onside kick to preserve the victory.
The Bow-Dazzlers (5-7) lost any chance to make the postseason for a second straight year. After ending a abysmal three-game losing streak with an upset win over the Disney Ducks last week, the Bow-Dazzlers were outmanned on the defensive line giving up close to 300 rushing yards.
Goof Troops, which won its third straight, rushed for 291 yards and had the ball almost 15 minutes longer than the Bow-Dazzlers did.
The win put them at their best record in franchise history and clinched the number two seed in the upcoming playoffs.
Minnie completed 32 of 48 with no interceptions in her second consecutive week with over 300 yards passing. Max Goof was 21 of 35 for 177 yards with one TD and one interception.
“Our offensive line has been a focal point of our offense, so I’m happy to embrace this moment with them,” Arizona Goof said after what had to be the most satisfying win of the 2016 season.
Neither team punted in the first half as Goof Troops took a 21-14 lead.
Minnie and Max each completed 13 of their first 15 passes, but a fumble by the pink and polka dotted quarterback and a missed 34-yard field goal by the Bow-Dazzlers Lady Kluck paved the way for an early 14-0 Goof Troops lead.
BTBD, which used a Disney Duck-style, hurry-up offense throughout, went 80 yards in nine plays to cut it to 14-7, with Minnie throwing five yards to Ortensia for the score.
The Troops then used up almost nine minutes with a 17-play, 66-yard drive that ended with Arizona’s 3-yard touchdown run to put his team ahead 21-7 with 3:43 left in the half.
With the drive stalled at the BTBD 11, the Goof Troops field goal team went on the field, but Max Goof took the snap from center and threw to Gilbert Goof for the first down. Arizona scored two plays later on a 3-yard run.
Minnie quickly drove the Bow-Dazzlers for a touchdown before the half ended.
Known across the league for her fashion sense, Minnie threw 15 yards to Ortensia for her second touchdown to cap another 80-yard scoring drive and slice the lead to 21-14 with 1:24 left.
The Bow-Dazzlers forced the game’s first punt on the opening possession of the second half. With a couple of big third-down catches by Clarice, BTBD drove to the Troops 19, but touchdown-scoring machine Ortensia fumbled at the 15 and Captain Goof-Beard recovered for Goof Troops.
The Troops would use up another 6½ minutes driving to the BTBD 13, where Bobby Zimmeruski‘s 30-yard field goal boosted the lead to 24-14 with 3:35 left in the third.
The Bow-Dazzlers were in a hole in a hurry.
After Lady’s miss on their opening possession, Max went 5-for-5 on a 10-play, 80-yard drive that ended with Tank’s 1-yard dive for the score.
Bow-Dazzlers kept the ball for just four plays after the following kickoff when Goof-Beard sacked Minnie, who fumbled and Amos Goofy recovered at the BTBD 22, setting up Max’s 7-yard TD pass to Goofy Goof to put the Goof Troops ahead 14-0 with 1:34 still left in the opening quarter.
