Clara Cluck is an athlete whose sole interest in Disney Sports Football League is to perform the national anthem before Aviators home football games. Despite wearing her opera stage costume consisting of a broad-brimmed hat with an ostrich feather since the 1930s, she doesn’t mind getting into a helmet and pads once a week for gameday.
Her involvement with the league stemmed from her relationships with Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, Clarabelle Cow, and Daisy Duck. Though her friendships with them didn’t begin until 1934, acknowledged in the Orphan’s Benefit, she actually appeared at their showing of Mickey’s Mellerdrammer in 1933. For the next six years, she worked the stage with ease and performed Bel Canto style of Opera songs with Clarabelle on the piano in Mickey’s Grand Opera (1936), Mickey’s Amateurs (1937), Mickey’s Birthday Party (1942), and Symphony Hour (1942). Anytime Mickey would organize an event in which he would be performing with his friends, Clara was a guarantee to show up.
Since then Clara Cluck has increased the number of appearances, both in cinema and television, but has never been as important as it had been in the 1930s and 40s. Roger Rabbit (1988), Mickey Mouse (1999), Mickey Mouse (2001), Mickey Mouse, Club of the Wicked (2002) And television series Mickey Mania (television series, 1999-2000), Disney’s Tous en Boîte (television series, 2001-2004), Have a Laugh! (2009-2012) and Mickey Mouse (television series, since 2013).
Translate Bel Canto to Italian and you’ll find the word means “beautiful singing”
As with many Disney characters, she was given small cameos in “Mickey’s Christmas Carol” (1983) and “Who Framed Roger Rabbit” (1988). She had some appearances in Mickey Mouse Works (1999), where she is presented as Daisy Duck’s neighbor. She also appeared in House of Mouse (2001). In one episode of that series she fell in love with Donald Duck and aggressively pursued him by puckering her lips in front of him, forcing him to dance with her, wearing dresses and posing provocatively to lure him in. At one point, she even grabs Donald and kisses him full on the lips. She almost tricked Donald into marrying her but Daisy stopped the wedding in time. In most adaptations, she is seen speaking properly rather than her usual clucks from her appearances in classic Disney cartoons.
Despite Clara’s absence from other Disney media and statistical ranking lists, Clara has remained a major supporting character in the Disney Comic Books and popular athlete in Mickey Mouse Athletics Football League.
The Wise Little Hen
Clara Cluck debuted in the 1934 Mickey Mouse cartoon Orphan’s Benefit, but it is possible she played the title role in “The Wise Little Hen” (June 9, 1934), as both characters were voiced by the same person, Florence Gill.
